Willie O’Ree holds a special place in the history of the National Hockey League and the Boston Bruins. The Bruins honored him on Wednesday, January 17, the 60th anniversary of O’Ree's breaking of the color barrier in professional hockey. O'Ree became the first black to play in an NHL game when he made his Bruins debut on Jan. 18, 1958. He was honored during a special pre-game puck drop before the Bruins defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 4-1, at TD Garden in Boston.
