These cleats were prepared for use by Alex Cora during the 2021 American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros. The cleat features an MLB Authentication hologram for the autograph.
Cora was known as a cerebral, workmanlike utility player during his 14-season MLB career and was pegged as a future manager very early on. He was enormously successful in his first season with the Red Sox as they went 108-54 and won the 2018 World Series.
These cleats, which were customized and painted by Stadium Custom Kicks, feature a mismatched Boston sports-themed design. A Boston skyline is found on the Patriots-themed red, white and blue right shoe, which also depicts a likeness of Bill Belicheck and "6X" on the toebox, commemorating the Patriots' Super Bowl victories. On the left shoe, the Bruins and Celtics are both featured, with black, white and gold striping on the toebox with Bobby Orr's #4 and a clover design on the toe cap and overlays. A cigar, in tribute to Red Auerbach, is found on the heel.
Currently, the average Minor League baseball player earns less than the federal minimum wage, yet must locate and pay for their own housing, and receives no financial or logistical support for nutrition and equipment needs. Furthermore, as 90% of Minor League ballplayers do not reach the Major Leagues, most never receive even minimal support after their playing careers are over.
