O'Ree, the 12th player to have his number retired by the franchise, was the first black player to play in a National Hockey League game 64 years prior, to the day. He played in two games in 1957-58 and in 1960-61 played in 43 games, scoring four goals with 10 assists, despite being legally blind in one eye.
O'Ree continued his life's work as a hockey pioneer beyond his playing career. He was named the NHL's Diversity Ambassador in 1998, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018 in the Builder category.
