The Capitals finished first in the Metropolitan Division with 105 points (49-26-7), but fell behind two games to none to the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round of the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs. What followed was a magical run to D.C.'s first major pro sports championship since 1991. The Capitals defeated the Blue Jackets in six games and bested the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games before staging an incredible come-from-behind Eastern Conference Final victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. Down 3-2 in the series, the Capitals held Tampa Bay scoreless after the 0:33 mark in the second period of Game 5. Finally, the Capitals scored 20 goals in their five-game Stanley Cup Final victory to put an end to the Vegas Golden Knights' incredible opening season.
