McDavid, who leads the NHL in scoring and is a leading candidate for the Art Ross Trophy, became the youngest captain in National Hockey League history on October 5, 2016. At 19 years and 266 days old, the Oilers entrusted their leadership to the Richmond Hill, Ontario, native whom they selected first overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Despite missing 37 games with a broken collarbone during his 2015-16 rookie season, McDavid scored 16 goals and 32 assists in 45 games.
McDavid burst onto the international hockey scene in 2013, when he played for the Canadian U18s at the IIHF World Championships. He scored a goal and added two assists in his debut against Slovakia and had a hat trick against Sweden, leading then-chief Detroit Red Wings scout to dub him "The Next One."
McDavid spent three fabulous junior seasons with the Ontario Hockey League's Erie Otters, where he tallied 97 goals and 188 assists in 167 games.
