Artist Denise Lawler captured the style of Hampton Roads coach John Brophy with this 2000 drawing of the iconic hockey man.

How do we know that's how Brophy looked in hundreds of games behind a professional hockey bench? Check out the alligator shoes.

The artwork measures 16 inches by 24 inches.

A MeiGray Letter of Authenticity certifying that this piece of artwork came directly from the Brophy family will be included. The item is offered as is.

The John Brophy Collection honors the “Bad Man” of the Eastern Hockey League. He was an inspiration for the legendary movie “Slap Shot.” He became one of the winningest coaches in professional hockey history and a beloved figure who gave every day of his life to the game he loved.

And as much as he did, he cared about only one thing: “To me, nothing, nothing replaces winning,” he told the New York Times in 2006. “Nothing.”

John Brophy of Antigonish, Nova Scotia played for EHL teams in Baltimore, Charlotte, New Haven, Long Island, Philadelphia and Jersey from 1955-1973. He left his mark in nearly every rink, usually with his stick and his wit. He racked up 3,817 penalty minutes in 1,143 EHL games, leaving little time to score 34 goals and 300 assists.

When he was done playing for two decades in the Eastern Hockey League, Brophy gave back every bead of sweat he drew from his foes. He went on to become the second-winningest head coach in professional hockey history, with his 1,027 wins between the Eastern Hockey League, North American Hockey League, Southern Hockey League, American Hockey League, World Hockey Association, Central Hockey League, National Hockey League, East Coach Hockey League and Southern Professional Hockey League, behind only Hall of Famer Scotty Bowman.
